AI made analysis free. Signatures got expensive.

Every team now has a copilot and every question gets a confident answer. What became scarce is the number a CEO can sign. That scarcity is structural.

Every commercial team now has AI. Every question gets a confident answer, a chart, a plausible category review by Thursday. The marginal cost of analysis has fallen to roughly zero, and every business is discovering the same thing: the volume of answers went up, and the number of decisions did not.

The politeness machine

An internal analyst's AI is a politeness machine. It produces the number its owner was asked for, in the shape the room wanted, with the confidence of a system that has never been wrong in its life. Ask the same question twice and you get two different numbers, each fluent, neither carrying a basis anyone wrote down. That is not a tooling failure. It is what analysis without accountability structurally produces.

What a signature needs

A signable number has properties that no prompt returns. Its parts sum to its whole. The figure on the screen ties to the figure in the file. The basis behind every rate is written down. The same inputs give the same answer on every run, and somebody outside the politics is prepared to defend it in the room where it lands.

Machinery, not assurances

Those properties do not come from care or seniority. They come from machinery: one engineered model instead of a hundred extracts, arithmetic built twice and proven to agree, and checks that refuse to publish when something does not reconcile. We use the same AI everyone else does. The difference is that nothing it produces reaches a decision without passing the gate.

The irony

The engineered answer is also the fast one. Because the business already lives in one model, the signable number arrives in hours, while the plausible one is still hunting for its data. Speed was never the trade-off. Accountability was.
